Heads Up, Mailers: USPS Rate Changes Are Coming This July — Here’s What You Need to Know
The United States Postal Service has announced upcoming rate increases set to take effect in July 2025, and if you rely on mail to reach your audience, now is the time to start planning.
At Progress Printing Plus, we want to make sure you’re informed and prepared to adjust your strategy for the months ahead. Here's what to expect from these changes—and what you can do to stay ahead.
Marketing Mail: Higher Costs and New Categories
USPS is planning a rate increase of 9.7% to 11.7% for Marketing Mail. This change reflects inflation, operational costs, and declining mail volumes. On top of the rate hike, there are several notable service changes:
Elimination of certain rate categories, including automation basic carrier route letter rates
Introduction of a new category: "Heavy Printed Matter" for parcels
Potential weight limit increase for Marketing Mail Flats—up to 24 ounces
These changes may impact how you package and prepare your direct mail, especially for larger or heavier pieces.
Periodicals: Fewer Discounts, Similar Increase
Periodical mailers will see a 9.4% rate increase on average. Service changes for Periodicals haven’t been detailed yet, but mailers should be prepared for possible shifts in how periodicals are processed and delivered.
What Mailers Should Do Now
Review your budget: These increases aren’t minor. If you're running large campaigns or regular publications, adjusting your mailing budgets now will help you avoid surprises later.
Update your mail prep: Review how your materials are currently categorized and prepared. If you send flats or parcels, you may need to adjust your bundling, sorting, or labeling to stay compliant with the new guidelines.
Consider hybrid strategies: Now may be a good time to diversify your marketing mix. Adding or enhancing digital outreach—email, social, or web content—can help balance out rising postage costs and still make an impact with our print projects.
While price hikes are never welcome news, there’s still incredible value in printed communication. At Progress Printing Plus, we’re here to help you make the most of your mailings—whether you’re adapting to new USPS requirements or exploring creative ways to get more from your budget.
